Tasmin Cooper is the girl behind the self named fashion label from New Zealand . Specialising in hand embroidered silk items , this Queenstown based designer is a firm New Zealand fashion favourite .

The art of hand embroidery is something that is falling by the wayside with the introduction of mechanical embroidery so its great to see needlepoint not only being revived but positioned as a luxury product .

Tasmin produces a huge array of small items ranging from Wallets , makeup purses , scarves and bags all with high quality silk and an attention to detail . But its her silk velvet collection which has really turned heads . The range is made up by a collection of silk velvet coats which all feature the Tasmin Cooper signature hand embroidered and beaded detailing . I love all the new initiatives to fund breast cancer research , after all the whole thing is kind of close to me . Not only am I the proud owner of a pair of boobies , but I also have some family history of breast cancer .

Ive been away for a bit covering New Zealand Fashion week for Nzgirl , and then getting organised when i got back !

This was my second time at the annual fashion extravaganza and it was a really interesting week with a few unexpected stand outs . Not only did i get to mosey along to the womens shows , but also headed along to menswear shows and a couple of streetwear labels . I love stuff that can be used for more than one thing . The pictured Quatrro Quarti 4/4 shelving and table unit is the perfect example of that in practice . Despite the long the name , the units are cute and sweet with the ability to be stacked for shelving in a number of ways or used as a s shaped table . Great for a modern living enviroment or for the kids room , the plastic shelves are stylish and durable.

Im going to be honest and say im generally not a huge fan of sofa beds but i understand why people need them . I mean if your short on space and still need an extra bed for when your friends stay , of if you have a tiny living space and need that sofa to be your bed . Or if you just really dig things that do more than one thing . All that taken into account I don't really .. like sofa beds.

That is of course , apart from the pictured Doc sofa bed . For this sofa bed is decidedly stylish - I mean just look at it . Its neither hideous nor huge . But not only that , it transforms in a A super cool way which reminds me of transformers and hence makes me like it a whole bunch more . And if that wasn't enough the sofa does not just change into one bed - but bunks !

I'm absolutely loving the return of the vintage inspired peep toe . The style reminds me of Marilyn and other pin up stars and a mix of sensuality and cuteness . In particular I'm loving the pictured "vintage" shoe from Yvonne Benneti in its floral print silk and playful wedge heel .

Its always nice to have a little something that gives you the creative spark when your feeling a bit down . That's why I love the T - shirt surgery community on Livejournal.com.

This entire community is full of souls who are so cute and creative they make entire wardrobes out of re made t-shirts . The modifications range from the simple ( t shirts made into halter tops and simple skirts ) to the amazing ( t shirts made into ornate dresses , tailored jackets and bags ).

Some make money of their modified t-shirts selling them on eBay , others make to order . Many are simply experimenting , asking questions or making tutorials for others to use . It seems a great and simple way to get into the growing DIY movement , and the folks here are so supportive its no wonder they boast over four thousand members .

Miranda Wellings may not be a name you know right now , but with critical success , strong directional collections and a growing following of fans she is destined to be one of New Zealand fashions elite .

A background in design and high fashion retail has given Miranda an excellent eye for detailing , drapery and design which is paired with an innate understanding of what women want to wear . Such a mix of skills is invaluable , and really shows in the quality of work Miranda is producing .

For her summer collection “signs in the spills” creamy bright yellows and stark whites play off shots of red and blue whilst her signature blot print unifies and softens the entire collection. I live in dresses . I'm of the opinion there is no other garment that can beat a dress for comfort and style . It kind of annoys me that in this country many see them as only suitable for formal attire , when they are really wardrobe perfection !

But , I am seeing is a whole new lot of dress converts as late . Designers are using dresses more and more in their collections and in a true sign of a fashion shift , nearly every women's store has at least 5 dress styles now – we have come a long way baby . I thank the rise of well cut garments paired with * wince * celeb fashion for the beginning of a sea change . After all how many girls did you see in chucks and a line sun dresses before Lilly Allen hit the charts ? In fact her name popped to mind when viewing the summer offerings from kiwi label Ooby Ryn , pictured is one of their new seasons dress styles with its great print , classic lines and worn with a fantastic Ooby Ryn belt .

Every season there is “A” colour . You can tell what it is because everyone uses it in there collections and suddenly out of no where it starts arriving in chain stores in huge numbers .
This season its yellow , yellow in every shade , texture and accent under the sun . And frankly as taken aback as i was when i heard yellow would be the colour du jour last year .... now that its arrived I'm really impressed by what's around .

The best locally comes from Zambesi , their summer collection makes a great colour follow up to the Zambesi winter offerings . The yellow that is peppered throughout their designs is paired with shimmering blues and crisp creams and whites which are melded in a signature leaf print . The pictured corsca dress is my favourite , but check out their site for great yellow swimwear and accent pieces .

Gather near boys and girls for I am going to share with you a label who kicks serious fashion ass . If you are from New Zealand chances are you have heard of them and if not find a stockist , because without it your fashion heart is going to break .

For summer 2006/07 dark colour choices are given texture and dimension through innovative cuts and prints . Items which at first appear simple take on a new look in movement with each individual item offering a plethora of styling choices . My picks are the suspender skirt , bubble dress and the denim . But this fantastic draped jersey dress is on the top of my summer must have list and i imagine many others as well .

I have been getting addicted to jewellery this season again , there is just so much fun stuff around its hard not to get excited . First up is the den of cool that is Good as Gold . Located on Victoria street this is Wellington's own land of kicks , class and clothes . Home to labels like Lover, Perks & Mini, Claude Maus, Nike, Schwipe and Creative Recreation amongst others its a great place to track down all that stuff you have been lusting over . Not only is the store and stock sweet , but the staff are even sweeter keeping shop fans updated with what's in store on their blog .

I missed out on a couple of shows at NZ fashion week last year , one of the ones i was most disappointed about missing was Little Brother . As the fashion editor for a women’s lifestyle magazine its not that i was snubbed , in-fact it would have been kind of pointless for me to be there but that said i missed out on an awesome show .

Little Brother’s winter 2006 collection GAME draws its inspiration from the sport of game shooting . Shooting Suits are made modern through the use of innovative cuts and fabric blends . Satin , leather and accent colours of mustard and pink add a modern edge to traditional dogs tooth and stripe suiting . Whilst mis matched patterns and fabrics add a touch of whimsy .

The overall look is dark , moody and urban . Completely wearable garments which include Little Brother staples as well as a new line of luggage .

Velvet Goldmine

Velvet touches were everywhere at New Zealand Fashion Week so as i started browsing what the stores had to offer both at home in New Zealand and abroad . i Kept an eye out for Velvet knowing that i should stock up now for the cooler months. And like the perfect shopper I am it didint take long to come across the perfect velvet finds that will have you chomping at the bit to throw on the luxe fabric weather your in the sunny southern hemisphere or the chilly northen one.

So lets start at the very beggining , my velvet lust was started at fashion week where velvet was made into beautiful coats at Barbara Lee and sash like touches at karen Walker . However the thing that really got me going was the dresses - velvet most commonly used for outerwear and accecories was used in Yvonne Benneti for Marilyn esque glamour girl gowns in brilliant blue . The glamour gowns seemed like an idea perfectly suited for velvet which shimmered in the light , smoothed over the feminine curves and created beautiful soft , seductive shiloettes and punchy colours. My favourite pick of these dresses was the pictured gown from Kate Sylvester which is the perfect mix of sweet and sexy and will fly off the shelves!

I like the idea that Luxe fabrics can be worn every day , weather this be silk to the office , cashmere on a trip out to the supermarket or a pair of satin edged shorts to work out at the gym. Ive never been too precious and can often be spotted wearing ornate beaded camis with a pair of $20 jeans on a trip out to buy bread and milk. So velvet? - surely its an everyday fabric. Enter the pictured Kimchi & Blue Chiffon Velvet Cami from Urban Outfitters which is a perfect mix of practicality and luxery. The pretty v neck cami has wide chiffon straps that knot where they join the body and angle down the V neckline, with silk panels at the meeting of the V. Its simply gorgeous and would look fantastic paired with a silk or crepe skirt for evening wear or denim and a pair of flats for coffe and cake with the girls. Delightfull.

Velvet from the nose to the toes? Why not - these Velvet Bow Kitten Heels are from one of my favourite stores Boden . Availiable in chocolate , olive and brown tweed these stylish and classic pointed toe kitten heels feature co-ordinating velvet ribbon detail which adds a bit of whimsy and a touch of girlishness to the practical shoe. A great choice for work wear as they will enable you to mix and match acessories but also a great idea for simply wearing under jeans or with a pair of summer shorts to add weight to your finished outfit.

Caplets were the style du jour last winter , with every fashionista clambering to get a caplet in every fabric and colour. This trend sets to continue as the fashion set appreciate the versatility of the almost jacket almost cardigan garment. The pictured Lux Crushed Velvet Puff Sleeve Jacket is availiable in both black and pink from Urban Outfitters . Puff sleeves are a great choice for those with a bigger arm as they create the illusion of thinness by juxtoposing the size of the puff with the actual size of your arm. When i was growing up my family was never the kind of people to use coasters , there really was no need as we had melanine kitchen ware and table tops and glass topped furniture. Leaving drink rings on the precious furniture was never an issue - but with the pictured Stamp Cups by Valeria Miglioli & Barnaby Barford that would never be a problem anyway. New Zealand Fashion Week

Around 14,000 guests and 600-700 buyers and media representing more than 14 countries attended 37 shows over the course of the week, with 46 labels showing and 54 businesses showcased in the Exhibition, up from 35 in 2004 New Zealand Fashion Week was a sucess.

And although some labels couldnt make it , it was a great time and a lot of new talent was put on show. I loved Deborah Sweeneys first Fashion Week offering , and Micheal Pattison showed us that he is a talent to watch . Whilst Karen Walker picturd above, Zambesi , Trelise Cooper and Hailwood put on show the exact reason why they are so well regarded in the Industry. New Favourites for me were Barbara Lee and Caroline Moore whose shows were innovative and beautiful yet never compromising on style or wearablitiy.

Major trends for winter 2006 see 80s influences continue with tapered /skinny leg pants , wide lappeled jackets and baloon skirts like the baloon dress pictured above from Zambesi. Whilst tudor and elizabethan influences make there way through with high necked white shirts and tailored gothic influenced suiting and outerwear.

Fashion Week was hectic , and it did get to the point when i would sit down in a show and then rummage through my goodie bag in the hope that a chocolate bar was included . Running from show to show - lugging my huge press bag and wearing impractical shoes is part of the payment though for having the oppourtunity to view so many great designers work.

And let me tell you , some of the best discoverys were not made on the catwallk but in the goodie bags and one of my favourites ? Pacifica Skin care.

The range of New Zealand made products include blends of unique and natural ingrediants such as fig oil , and seaweed mixed with there luxe and pure base oils of sweet almond and calendula . The result are beautiful products which smell gorgeous , look fantastic and keep my skin looking bright and fresh whilst combinations like grape and apple , papaya and peacherine and cherry and tangerine keep my senses tingling!

My favourite however is the date , fig and olive hand and body lotion which smells gorgeous and is lovely on post sun skin.

Im now engaged , out of University and working , saving for a house and doing what appears to be very 'adult' things its enough to make me go mad.

It is then nice sometimes to indulge in things from my childhood , weather this be milk and cookies before bed , playing board games with my fiance or my new favourite past time - bubble baths! And whilst i am trying to recapture my youth somewhat with a rich sudsy bath im not so desperate that I want to use the novelty bubble bath sold in every department store world wide. Anyone that knows me knows i have a thing for cooking - especially baking things like cupcakes and poundcakes or indulging in the occasional pancake breakfast. So of course my eyes can sometimes gloss over when in the homewares section of my favourite department stores.

That said , i have never quite found a better range of bakeware and cookware than the living kitchen range from Nigella . The domestic godess herself has put her seal of approval on everything from coffe cups to bread bins and measuring spoons all which are designed in soft tones of greens , creams and blues which compliment the curvacious and organic forms used.

Although i take delight in every product in the range the cute measuring cups pictured above are just too adodrable to pass up - Nigella designed them with beauty and practicality in mind after she discovered that nearly every measuing cup she came across was stainless steel and practical without any personality or charm.

I admitt im an avid shopper , and that i probably spend too much money . I also know that I can justify any purchase - even the most ridiculous but there is one thing that im stocking up on right now which is honestly a great buy.

The humble necklace has never before been such a fashion staple , and gone are the days of only diamonds and sterling silver with a range of funky jewels know availiable in everything from 24 kt gold and turqouise to inexpensive beads and wool.

Originally i was looking for something different to wear with my plain black long sleeve and baby tees . Ideally something with a little colour , and texture that could elevate my plain basics to after dinner drink wear and that could also be worn with my little black dress. I came across the pictured cloisonnAc enamel decorated pendant above at Urban Outfitters . Hanging from a gold toned chain is a large circular enamel pendant painted with pretty butterfly and flowers in bright color with gold highlights . Baubles and beads hang either side and the whole necklace and pendant has an almost asian feel which leaves the rather large jewel feeling dainty and intricate as well as bold . A great buy at $48.00 (USD) that can be worn layerd with coloured beads for a more casual look.

For something a little more casual , and utterly cute the above pictured crocheted cluster necklace made by Patchy NYC avaiable from Fred Flare is bold , bright and beautiful . Hanging on chains of bronce and gold the necklace is comprised of two layers of hand-crocheted petals tiny vintage beads and other special details which create a jumble of wildflower fun. Perfect to wear with a plain colourfull tank or as a statement peice against a crisp black shirt the necklace which retails for $526 (USD) is as much art as fashion.

One of my favourite designers of all time Karen Walker , has been making jewllery to accompany her fashion collections for some time - and although at the moment its her statement tusk / tooth necklace which is being seen absolutely everywhere is the style du jour my favourites are still the small pendants and chain combinations like the Runaway girl Pendant pictured above. Availiable in sterling silver , yellow gold and white gold the necklace retails from $98.00 (USD) and is an iconic piece of Karen Walker design.

And sometimes the best bold finds are closer to home , my lovely partner just bought me this great bold vintage inspired necklace from the auction site Trademe for next to nothing . Which just goes to show some shopping really is a bargin.

At the beggining of this year I got the chance to go down to Dunedin Fashion Week after winning a design competition. I fell in love with the beautiful city , wonderful people and AMAZING designers - with so many tallented Fashion Designers calling the student city home Fashionistas were spoilt for choice at the action packed week.

One of my favourite labels was Aduki designed by Juliet Fay who creates innovative and funky fun clothing which is simple , wearable and different. This ranges from printed tees to classic well cut skirts and pants and one of the best v neck hoodies i have ever found.

Now her designs are availiable to all through the new Aduki website . Made in flash , this funky website encapsulates the ideas behind the label itself and presents them in an easy to use and cute interface which works well and is not a victim to slow loading times.

And if im going to be honest more than once i have been suckerd in by something that looks and smells good but provides no results. I have a few Fashion Week events to go to , you know the types that involve cocktail dresses and impossibly high heels. And despite my rather expansive wardrobe I assured myself that for such swanning and networking I indeed needed not one but two new dresses.

NO. After two weeks of hunting I almost gave up and then wandered into Far Pavillions on Victoria Street in Wellington. Air New Zealand Fashion Week is fast approaching , and whilst im begging for show tickets and arranging airfares a huge amount of work is being done up at Auckland to make sure everything is running smoothly - and by being someone helpfull you can be part of the fashion week action and maybe get a foot in the door.

Fashion personal is looking for volynteer VIP minders for Fashion week . As a minder you will be appointed to an international buyer, and will be responsible for making sure that they have everything they need to do business. You will accompany them to all on-site shows (you won’t have allocated seats, but you will get to see the shows), organise cars and taxis, make sure they eat, make and get to appointments – all co-ordinated through FINZ .

Fashion and style's posts have been a little absent of late but its not due to a lack of interest in this fantastic fashion and style blog. The reasons for the lack of posts is two fold - the first is that on the 13th of August i became engaged and have been spending a lot of time recently with my head burried in bridal magazines.

The second is that we here at Fashion and Style and Fashionista.co.nz are working on a new design and layout so that the look of this site compliments the fantastically designed things we write about . It is our aim to have this design implemented within the next few months but as of Monday next week normal content and daily updates will resume.

I started a new job this week which involves much too-ing and fro-ing and commuting with lunch and spare pairs of shoes and work diarys . Its for this reason that I am currently obsessed with handbags and the fact its been a bit difficult to find one that does all i want it to do whilst still looking utterly fantastic. That is why this Fridays top five is the top five practical hand bag finds

Stardust Medium Tote I am the first to admit I am a little on the messy side and have been known to just throw everything into my bag regardless of pockets and sometimes this really is the best way to pack your bag and the simplest way to carry things from A to B. All that know me well are aware of my tea fixation , and those who have had tea with me are likely to have noticed my fascination with vintage tea sets . There is something to be said of the style and grace of yesteryear - and in my mind there is not a better time to re-visit past sensibilities than when drinking tea and eating cake with friends.

Sometimes when its a bit chilly outside you just cant be botherd with a jacket or coat , and a bulky jumper or jersey is not what your looking for it can be a bit hard to get dressed in the morning . In those moments fabrics such as a angora and cashmere with there light weight and cosy warmness are your best friend.

But whats best about cashmere is the fact in a fine knit it looks and drapes exactly like buttery jersey fabric but at twice the warmth. It was not until last year , when i broke my laptop and had to use my partners P.C for a couple of weeks that i realised how much I wanted my apple mouse to do more. I talk A lot about the weather , but its mainly because of the fact that fashion is dictated by the seasons and whilst we are still in the thrusts of winter the new spring collections of our favourite New Zealand designers are temptingly within seasonal reach.

Sometimes i wake up in the morning and i just feel dull , lifeless and bored. Nothing in my wardrobe excites me , and everything seems so one dimensional and plain. Cheap , stylish and practical flats are the shoe du jour. Sure stilletos lengthen the leg , you cant run without the sports shoe and at a push yes i agree that a medium heel is a pin tuck trousers best friend .. but flats? They are a whole different story. There are some things in life which just make things easier , these change from person to person . For example I have a fondness for cars , heaters in the middle of winter and my iPod when on a long distance car journey but others are plainly universal like the common watch.

There are some things in fashion which just work. You only have to examine the collections of your favourite designers to see repetition in tailoring , drapery , finishing or fabric types. Or look at garments which are considered wardrobe staples - such as pencil skirts , empire waist dresses and pin tuck pants.

These ideas and themes are repeated because they are successful - they look , wear and function fantastically allowing the end wearer to look and feel fantastic. Its an everybody wins situation. This time of the year is really the best for shopping , winter items go on sale as spring lines come in to your favourite stores. But at the same time cool weather will be along for a while yet which means those mid season buys are actually worth it.
The only problem is , if you are looking for something new and wintery it can be hard to find new stock in any stores - right? Wrong!

Scarpa have just received a new shipment of footwear available through there website and in store. Amongst the sandals , wedges and summery flats are the pictured "ginger" shoes from Diesel footwear. A surfing , Snowboarding runner girl like me has to have certain tricks up her sleeve - braving the elements in New Zealand weather is not for the faint hearted. An example of one of these tricks would be the Lip Balms from Lush cosmetics.

Good fashion and good design are just that...good. Irrespective of where it was made , who it was made by , and how much money it is being sold for.

I know what your thinking - I know this! Why is she bringing this up? Because sometimes I come across people that make me feel like I need to remind them that just because something is not made by the 'Louis Vuittons' or 'Blackhouse Design' 's of the world does not necessarily mean it's not good design.

My wardrobe is made up of vintage Dior , Karen Walker , Tsubi and Chanel , as well as items from chainstores and department stores . My furniture ranges from thriftstore finds to antiques and one off design pieces but I consider everything I own to be of good quality and good design.

So I urge everyone out there to quit the pretention and try and look at objects , homewares , sofas , artwork , clothing and footwear for what it is instead of relying on a price tag , a persona or a brand name to make you feel it's good design.

In the last few years we have seen a rise in all that is prim , proper and feminine . Baby pink is no longer a dirty colour whist the 1940s and 1950s have become a time to revere not shun . So in this new age of girlishness I have embraced my inner gracious girl and have come up with my top 5 girlie buys.

Inspired by the luxury cosmetics of the 1940s the glamourette contains , rouge & puff on one side , translucent powder & puff on the other side and a complementing lipstick in the handle . Now a little hard to find they are still available from the benefit website in the bye buys section although fashionista would advise you to get in quick – once they are gone they will most probably not come back .

2- Alloy restricted apple flats - Audrey Hepburn is the embodiment of glorious feminine style. The petite brunette would often be spotted in tailored capris , a crisp white shirt and of course the ever famous flats. Once forgotten , flats have now become a wardrobe essential – not simply because of there practicality but also there fantastic style which is often spiced up with the use of ribbons , unconventional prints or bright tones. The flat is the less serious but super stylish shoe. 3- Wrap Front Blazer from Bebe - There is nothing more girlie than the showing off a lady's curves , which contrary to many peoples beliefs can be done whilst keeping everything covered. A wrap front blazer is a great option to show off the figure , create a waist or slim down a silhouette. Choose one with a little stretch in order to get the most flattering fit and pair back with everything from Denim , to suit pants or even over your favourite dress.

4- The Gelato Range from Glamourpuss Australia Every girl needs a hand bag , a place to store all her essential items and if you are me – a place to hide away snack treats when shopping. However there are bags .. and then there are bags . 5- Note Cards and Gift Cards from iomoi There is something very old fashioned about writing note cards or thank you cards but as cheesy as it sounds i actually enjoy doing it. And i have to say that if i have given a gift its a really nice thing to receive a cute little card in the mail to say thanks.
